1959-1961 National Trust restores property
1961 Shadows opens to the public as National Trust Historic Site
1977 Shadows Service League volunteer group is formed and “Charley at the Shadows” education program for 1st graders is offered for the first time
1980 Friends of the Shadows membership program begins
1983 Architectural-based education program is presented at 5th-grade level
1988 Conservation Survey of entire collections is completed resulting in improvements to storage and care of collections, including annual conservation work
1989 Historic Structures Report detailing history of construction, architectural changes, restorations by Weeks Hall and later by the National Trust is produced
1991 National Endowment for the Humanities funds a self-study to direct research and program efforts utilizing extensive documentation in the Weeks Family Papers
1992 African-American Oral History class for high-school students starts
1993 National Endowment for the Arts funded Historic Landscape Report is completed resulting in decision to rehabilitate the Weeks Hall era landscape
1995 Revised Furnishing Plan is produced
1999-2003 Capital Campaign is launched to purchase property at 320 East Main for a Visitors Center. Former bank building is renovated and Shadows Visitors Center opens in May 2003.
